From the seventh century Buddhism first spread in Tibet, and Indian treatises were translated, with the Indian master Śāntarakṣita invited to the country.

The first spread of Buddhism in Tibet began in the seventh century. Philosophical activity in this period consisted mainly of translating Indian treatises, and early interest in logic and epistemology may owe something to the invitation of Śāntarakṣita, the Indian master who joined those tools to Madhyamaka.
